Gemma's laptop

Gemma came to me complaining that her laptop screen was knackered the other week. After a bit of fiddling about I came to the conclusion that it definitely wasn't a software issue and left her plugged into an external screen to finish her uni work. She stropped ever so slightly when I told her it wouldn't be fixed by the time she went home for a week, and there was talk of buying a replacement - the annoying thing being that it was two months out of warranty -nice build quality Dell (it's an Inspiron 1525). Fortunately the internet was full of similar reports, so I was able to determine that it was the inverter for the backlight and not the whole screen. I ordered the part from eBay, made Gemma go home sans computer (and thus have to put up with nightly dancing shows on TV).

The part arrived at the weekend, and using a guide I found on the web, I was able to get the inverter replaced in about half an hour. Queue one very pleased Gemma who immediately began replacing photos on flickr that she'd processed whilst the laptop was attached to the (uncalibrated) monitor. And the cost of the repair was only a tenner, as opposed to the several hundred quid for a new laptop. Bonus.
